Pediatrician Oscar Gomez, a member of the iowa MOST team, was invited to speak at a Da Vinci University School of Medicine Huehuetenango-based conference that was live streamed to four other locations in Guatemala and Mexico. As an infectious diseases specialist, his topic was acute gastroenteritis and its after effects. He received an award from the president of the Da Vinci University and the dean of the school of health sciences and was interviewed by numerous media outlets. In his presentation, his message to the medical students at the conference was "children are at risk of stunted growth and cognitive impairment as a result of gastroenteritis (GE)." His position at Vanderbilt University allows Dr. Gomez to conduct research into the prevention of GE through environmental modifications, immunizations, increasing proteins, micronutrients and ready to use therapeutic fluids (RTUTF).
