Dental Health Outreach

Up and up and over a boulder encrusted road we went to reach Sacpic, a village with a small school.  We carried toothbrushes donated by Johnson and Johnson employees to the children in the school and also a lesson on dental health care.
The area is poor and visitors like us are entirely uncommon to the place.  The teachers, parents' committee and students were pleased by such an unusual event.
Reinhard brought his horse puppet with its big teeth to show how to brush.  He explained about bacteria and its dangers.  He warned sudents about rotten teeth due to hidden bacteria.  Before he left, he asked for a promise from students that they would use their new toothbrushes well and often.
Johnson and Johnson had also supplied our mission with first aid kits that included band-aids and gauze, sterile wipes and antibiotic cream.  Krasi presented the kits and the teachers and principal were most happy to have things that can all too easily be taken for granted by those of us who can have them quickly at hand.
We went to a second school and repeated the toothbrush distribution and the instruction lesson.  At both schools the attendance was down sharply because whole families have left the area to work at harvesting coffee.  When the harvest season is over they will be back, but with a big gap in the children's education.  We hope their classmates will teach them what they learned today about dental health and we hope they will use the toothbrushes we left  behind for them.
